Can a Link Exchange Increase Website Traffic

One of the traditional methods for getting links to your site is to engage in a link exchange. Many webmasters still spend hour after hour promoting their website by trying to exchange links with other webmasters. So what is a link exchange? And does this technique really work to send more visitors to your website?

First of all, a link exchange can be informal or formal. An informal link exchange is the process that most webmasters use of just sending out emails to as many webmasters as they can find. Hopefully, a few of those webmasters will reply and agree to exchange links. This means each webmaster puts a link to the other webmasters website on his or her own site.

A formal link exchange generally refers to an internet based system that is set up to facilitate these sorts of link exchanges. There are some well known link exchange systems on the web that are easily found via a web search. These systems make it a bit easier to swap links but this process still requires quite a bit of time and effort to get any links.

Link exchanges like this used to work reasonably well in driving traffic to websites. However, the search engines have gotten more sophisticated with their algorithms and this sort of link building exercise does not work anywhere near as well as it once did.

There are several problems with this sort of link building approach. First, all the links are reciprocal links, which means that each site has a link to the other site. Search engines greatly prefer links that are one way rather than reciprocal. The problem with getting one way links however is that you cannot just contact other webmasters and ask for a one way link back to your own site. They will ask “what’s in it for me”?

A second problem is that more and more webmasters now realize that this approach doesn’t work very well anymore so most of the time webmasters will simply ignore requests for a link exchange. Even in the “old days” it was an incredibly onerous and time consuming task to send out email after email to other webmasters. But now the response rate is so low that it hardly makes the effort worthwhile.

These days you really need to get one way links to make any progress in promoting your website. These links should also be from relevant websites, since search engines now reward websites for getting links from other related websites rather than random websites. So how do you get these links?

One way is to purchase text links. However, the search engines frown on the process of purchasing text links on specific sites, because in the past this approach was used too often between sites that were completely unrelated. It can still work to increase your page rank on a limited basis, but this should not be used as your main linking strategy.

Another way is to comment in forums or on blogs. This approach can work ok, but forum and blog comment pages generally do not have much link value so you must do a great deal of posting. Furthermore, blogs are often set up with the “no follow” attribute which means that links you get there will have no SEO value.

A third way to get links is to write articles. This is still a good way to get links and to market your website, but it takes a reasonable amount of work. You must write lots of articles to be successful at this approach.

A new and better way to get one way related links is to use an automated system that finds these for you. If you can find and use a system that does this, then you can save a great deal of time and money over the other approaches.

I’m constantly amazed at the number of business professionals unaware of how straight forward it is to build a visible Internet presence. I recognize there may be business professionals who also don’t care about this — whatever there reasons. That’s fine.

What’s the recipe?

Let me first start with the chronology.

  • I built my Search Advantage “Case Study” website
  • I launched my “Case Study” website July 31, 2006, and leverage a specific on-line networking platform to promote my “Case Study” website against the keyword phrase: Internet Presence (approximately 170 million hits).
  • My on-line networking platform content started to index quickly (Aug. 3, 2006).
  • My actual “Case Study” website started to index quickly hitting the 2nd page of Google a week after launching (Aug. 8, 2006).
  • My actual “Case Study” website makes the 1st page of Google 10th hit (Aug. 16, 2006).
  • My actual “Case Study” website make the 1st page of Google 5th hit (Sep. 20, 2006).
  • Less than 60 days after putting effort into raising the ranking of my “Case Study” website (against the keyword phrase: Internet Presence) my”Case Study” website consistently ranks in the middle of the first page of hits in Google out of approximately 170 million hits. Incidentally, my actual “Case Study” website also consistently ranks in the middle of the first page of hits in Google out of approximately 347 million hits (against the keyword phrase: Search Advantage).

    The specific details of how I leveraged these concepts to drive my “Case Study” website to the first page of Google are visible to anyone on the Search Advantage website.

    Applying these - exact - same principles, substituting your name for the keyword phrase, will drive - any content associated with your name - higher in Google as well.

    What You Need To Know About PageRank

    What is Google’s PageRank?

    If you have ever done any reading about search engine optimization or were just curious how you can get your site to the top of the Google search engine results, understanding PageRank is vital. I’m going to introduce you to the basics of PageRank and also provide a brief discussion on how much you should really worry about PageRank if you are running a website or Internet business.

    Google’s founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, invented PageRank and it forms the basis for how Google works. Google didn’t become the best search engine in the world by chance, it became the best search engine because it provided the best results. PageRank is in fact the technology that gave Google its competitor-killing edge, a way to greatly improve the accuracy and validity of a search response to a user query.

    In essence PageRank provides a means to determine the value of a website for any given search term or keyword phrase. This value is determined by how websites link together with the more popular (and theoretically better) sites receiving more links. It’s these incoming links that help the site have a high PageRank value and thus display higher up in search results.

    Let’s read how Google explains their PageRank system:

    PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important.”

    Important, high-quality sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don’t match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines all aspects of the page’s content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it’s a good match for your query.

    The key rule to understand is that it is a combination of variables that determine how well your site performs in Google. These are the most important variables to worry about:

    • Incoming links to your site.
    • The relevancy (to your site’s theme) of the pages linking to your site and the PageRank of these pages.
    • The keywords that other sites use to link to your site.
    • The keywords on your website in particular in places like page titles and headlines.

    Some of those factors you can control, others you can manipulate but not directly control. The important thing to understand regarding PageRank is that all those variables will determine how high your site shows up in search engine results. PageRank is the name for the technology that ranks sites and includes all those variables and many more.

    PageRank Numbers — The Little Green Bar

    If you install the Google Toolbar into your browser you can choose to switch on the PageRank display (it’s in the options). This will make a little green bar appear above web pages you visit. The green bar represents the PageRank of the page you are viewing in your browser. The ranking starts at 0 (no ranking) up to 10, the highest ranking and can be blanked out completely if the page has been banned from Google.     Google created quite a storm when it launched its green PageRank bar. Webmasters became obsessed with methods to increase their PageRank and high PageRank sites started selling text links for hundreds of dollars. A link from a high PageRank page, from a PageRank 7, 8, 9 or 10, has been known to make lower PageRank pages increase a full number, even two if the incoming link is from a PageRank 10, and there is no doubt it is good for search engine rankings.

    The problem with PageRank being displayed in a little green bar is that it is very hard to really gauge how valuable a ranking is. The Google PageRank technology is complex containing many variables, some of which I mentioned above, and to interpret a number from 0-10, especially when only Google really knows how it works, is difficult. Worse still, the visible representation, the green bar that the public can see, only changes on a quarterly basis, while the real PageRank of a page changes on a daily basis. Most of the time you are looking at a very outdated ranking value.

    PageRank paranoia is an issue that every webmaster may fall victim to. There are rumours that Google will be changing the PageRank system because they are not happy with how it is being manipulated and interpreted. As a rule of thumb, watch the green bar with interest but don’t take it too seriously or spend too much time trying to force it to increase (staring and yelling at it will do you no good, trust me on that one).

    The Randomness Of PageRank

    Search engine optimization experts actively track PageRank and investigate things like page backlinks to try and work out what the top search engine ranked sites are doing right so they can replicate and then surpass them in the rankings. This is a very good strategy for any person running a web business looking to improve their search ranking. There is no need to reinvent the wheel - copy what works and do it slightly better than the competition.

    This is all good in theory, but unfortunately there is a good amount of randomness in PageRank and search engine results. Google of course would argue that it’s not randomness and their PageRank system is merely using algorithms that we don’t understand, and no doubt that is true, but for the human webmaster trying to get traffic, PageRank and Google can be baffling sometimes.

    There are instances of high PageRanked sites having little to no backlinks. Given that incoming links are one of the most important variables used in PageRank calculations you have to scratch your head and wonder how a site with no links could have a big green bar. Google’s own backlink lookup tool is another phenomenon that search engine experts often choose to ignore rather than try and evaluate.

    Thankfully the randomness of PageRank can result in positive outcomes as well, with your sites jumping high into search results in places where you wouldn’t expect it. The only consistency is randomness but there is logic that can be followed and smart search engine optimization practices that when implemented well will work. Just don’t expect it to work precisely how or when you want it to.

    What You Should Know And Do About PageRank

    This advice I offer from experience as an avid PageRank chaser and search engine optimizer. The key to gaining PageRank is to ignore it and focus on the variables that control it.

    Having people link to your site has always been a good thing and PageRank was in fact a result of this. Don’t get confused with the order of things, first came the Internet and links and then came PageRank. Focus on amassing quality incoming links from quality sites relevant to your site. This practice will naturally improve your PageRank and also increase the amount of visitors coming to your site. Don’t get bogged down chasing links from only high PageRank sites or waste energy adding links from just any site willing to link to you. Do things naturally and your site will grow naturally.

    Learn about the importance of keywords. Keywords play a crucial role in bringing the right type of traffic to your site but you should never spend half an hour in front of a computer trying to come up with the perfect title for your article. Name your content logically and think about what search words your audience would use to find your article and you can very quickly and easily develop good keywords without spending hours and hours tweaking every little phrase and heading. See what your competitors do in regards to keywords if you are completely lost.

    If you build a good website with good content, always keep in mind your important keywords and proactively work every day to earn and create new backlinks to your site you will improve your PageRank. The best sites with the highest PageRank never worry about PageRank, they simply keep churning out content that people love to link to. This is a strategy that every webmaster and Internet entrepreneur should emulate for success online.

    The SEO hints and tips you find here will not only show you how to optimize a web page properly, but also get you high Google listings and masses of free traffic. That is worth every penny you might spend on the right information.

    You no doubt understand all the basic stuff, but in case you are new to this, let’s first have look at these basic SEO hints and tips, since many seem to omit them from their web pages. The most important are the HTML tags that are used by search engines to determine the relevance of your page to the search term used by the search engine’s customer.

    Note the term ‘web page’, because many people don’t realize that Google, along with most other search engines, doesn’t list websites, but individual web pages. You have to understand how search engines calculate your listings if you are to understand how to optimize a web page.

    I am going to refer to Google, not only because it is the biggest of the search engines, but also to save the bother of referring to search engines all the time. I will refer to Google, but what applies to them also applies to the rest. Here are the main SEO basics:

    a) The TITLE tag. This appears in the HEAD portion of your html, and is not actually seen by your visitors but is the most important tag on your web page because the spiders place very high weight to it. Use your main keywords here, and also any other text that will inform Google of the theme of your web page.

    b) Heading (H) tags. Your page title should be placed within H1 tags, and should contain the same major keyword as you used in the TITLE tag. Any subheadings should be contained within H2 tags. I don’t use any of the lower tags, from H3 down, except perhaps H3 very occasionally. Google will regard any text with H tags as being important, with most weight given to the lower numbers. However, if you place everything in H1 tags, that will dilute its importance on your page and defeat the object.

    c) Text enhancements: Use bold, italic and underline enhancements sparingly, and where you one again want to stress the importance of certain keywords.

    d) Your keyword density should be concentrated in the first third of your web page. Don’t use too many: I get good results with under 1% overall keyword density, but using the main keyword in the first 100 characters, once in the last paragraph and once more each 300 words but concentrated in the first third of the page. Thus, an 800 word page will have the keyword three times in the first 250 words and once in the last paragraph.

    e) Meta tags: the only meta tag worth using is the description tag, which is used by most search engines in the description of your web page in their listings. Google mainly uses it exactly as you write it. The keyword tag can also be used, but few search engines are thought to use it: Google does not. Any other meta tags are a waste of your space. Anybody that claims differently is wanting to sell you something.

    These are the basic hints on SEO, now here are some of the more advanced SEO hints and tips that will teach you not only how to optimize a web page, but to understand the way that search engines work. These are less obvious, and generally not used by beginners to search engine marketing.

    f) Use text links to other pages on your website. Search engine spiders love text, and fancy graphics or java links might look great, but don’t get you kudos from the spiders. Stick to text if you want a good listing: there’s no point in fancy graphical links if you have no visitors to use them.

    g) Try to use as much text as possible, and as little code as possible. Your code to text ratio should be minimized as far as possible because . . . yes, you’ve got it! Spiders love text!

    h) Another useful SEO tip is to maximise your off page linking strategy. It is possible to get a #1 spot on Google with no content: just loads of links coming into your web page from other websites. Not just any websites, but authority sites, so reciprocal links to and from web pages not directly related to your niche are a waste of time, and can even harm you. Link farms can positively damage you.

    i) Use anchor text for your links where at all possible. Google shouldn’t have to work out what your web page is about: tell them. Hyperlink your keyword to your website, but don’t use the same form of keyword from every webpage linking to yours. Mix them about so as to keep the links fresh.

    j) And lastly: keep adding pages to your website. A single website containing 80 pages will likly provide you with more visitors that two of 40 pages due to a higher overall Google listing from the former as compared to both of the 40 page sites. Refresh your content frequently by adding new pages, but don’t ignore your older pages: rdevise these now and again with new vocabulary. Google detests stagnation.

    These are just a few SEO hints and tips that can teach you how to optimize a web page. There are many, many more. Some quite basic, others very much more advanced than the above. However, you can’t get everything free!

    Why do buyers that perform a DIY Home Inspection end up purchasing the house more often, than a buyer that has a hired inspection? And why do sellers that do their own home inspection sell their homes in less time, and have a smoother closing process, than a seller than does not do a home inspection? Read On.

    Home buyers that do their own DIY Home Inspection are less likely to develop a list of repairs and concerns as large as a hired Home Inspectors list of repairs and concerns. Why is that? A buyer doing their own Home Inspection, with a good inspection guide (instruction) and report will see defects that they know they are capable of correcting, or they have a friend or relative that can makes these repairs. Consequently, the defects are not listed on their inspection report.

    Another reason: After signing an earnest money agreement, home buyers, often talk and plan on remodeling certain areas of their new home. They are not concerned at all with these areas, while inspecting. Defects found in these areas are rarely on their report. While a hired inspector will list everything he can find to limit his liability. And last but not least, the dialog between the hired Home Inspector and the buyer, while discussing issues found, can “kill deals”. The communications by the Home Inspector needs to be handled just right and delicately, or the buyer ends up with a bleak picture of the home, when in fact the home is a solid home.

    A Buyer doing their own DIY Home Inspection gives them more free time in their new home and they will know the home better and have a better understanding of the working components. This builds a stronger tie between the buyer and the home.

    A good DIY Home Inspection Report should have included, a “Pre-Inspection Agreement”. The Pre-Inspection Agreement should be written to eliminate any liability between you, (the Realtor), and your client (buyer or seller). Your client would simply read and sign the agreement and give you a copy for your records.

    Most DIY Home Inspection Reports on the market do not have instructions to guide your client through their inspection or a Pre-inspection Agreement. They consist of a checklist only, without an instruction guide. These Inspection Reports are useless unless the user has a good back ground in construction and the working components of a home.

    Today, many Realtors are recommending to their home sellers, to have a Home Inspection before, or at the time it is listed. And for good reasons, statistics will show homes that have had a Pre-Inspection before the listing, have sold faster, because the buyer has more confidence in the home, especially if the seller is willing to do an inspection on the home they are selling. The seller is being “up front” about the home.

    For the Realtor, knowing what defects are present gives you and the seller time to discuss what should be fixed and what should not, (perhaps sell As Is). And, it allows the seller to do their own repairs or shop for the best price for the repairs. The seller’s inspection will provide an accurate and complete disclosure protection for the Realtor and the seller. It may also be used to help the seller rethink the selling price of the home.

    A good selling point for sellers is to have your completed Inspection Report available for buyers when they walk through. Always leave the completed report in a conspicuous place. Reading this Report is valuable to the potential buyer and shows the seller is up front about the home and its condition. The report will show defects and if they have been corrected, it is suggested to give them that update in the report as well.

    A Buyer or Seller does not have to be an expert to diagnose many problems found in a home and most repairs have do-it-yourself remedies.
